Old existing 400 Watt Metal Halide technologies were replaced with New State of the Art Fluorescent technology. Light levels were improved and was the quality of light. Sensors were installed on aisle fixtures to turn individual lights off when the areas went unoccupied.

Soft Starting Induction Motors - The Motorboss Solution

In common with all soft start devices Motorboss uses thyristors to accurately control the voltage applied at the motor terminals.

A characteristic of a thyristor is the ability to switch rapidly from "OFF" to "ON" when pulsed, and to remain "ON" until the current through the device falls to zero at the end of each half-cycle in the AC supply.  This process is called self-communication and allows Motorboss to regulate the current flowing through the thyristor.

Using this principle and by connecting two thyristors in anti-parallel to each of the phase connections to a motor, Motorboss can continuously adjust the voltage to the motor terminals.  This provides just sufficient voltage for the motor to accelerate the load.  The result is a starting motor torque that increases in a stepless manner ensuring a soft start for both the motor and the driven load.

Motor Efficiency - The Motorboss Solution

When working at or near a full load, the typical 3-phase induction motor is relatively efficient, achieving efficiencies between 80% and 92%.  However, motor efficiency falls dramatically when the load falls to less than 50% of rated output.  In fact, very few motors actually experience consistent fully-rated operation, the vast majority operate at much lower loads due to either over-sizing (a very frequent situation), or natural load variations.

Motorboss has the ability to do something an AC induction motor cannot: intelligently adjust the amount of electricity it draws in relation to the amount of load needed to perform the work.  Utilizing thyristors and a powerful micro computer, Motorboss constantly monitors the efficiency of a motor and ensures the proper input power is applied -- exactly matching the load as it changes.  Even the smallest variation in demand will be detected and Motorboss will respond -- supplying power to the motor in less than 100th of a second.  And, motor speed is not affected in any manner.

By detecting the load at any instant and adjusting the motor terminal voltage accordingly, Motorboss is able to save some of the excitation energy and load loss.  This will improve motor Power Factor to a greater extent when the motor is running inefficiently at light loads.

Because Motorboss 'electronically sizes' the motor to its job of work at any instant in time means that the motor is always working under its ideal full load condition.  This means that with Motorboss installed, a motor will be operating closer to 100% efficiency at all times.
