Soft Start your AC Motor to Reduce Demand Charges
What are Demand and Demand Charges?

Demand is the rate at which electrical energy is delivered to your business, expressed in kilowatts (kW), at any given instant or averaged over any designated time period.

Demand Charge is the amount charged for the highest average power demand recorded by your utility company during any 15 minute time period.

Utility companies charge for demand to recover some of the cost of providing the infrastructure and the ability

of supplying the necessary power the business demands at any given moment.

For example, if a business requires an average of 750 kW to meet the electrical needs of its facility, but during times of maximum activity the demand jumps to 1250 kW (due to starting your AC motors), the utility company must have the capability of supplying 1250 kW every day of the year.  To cover this cost, the utility will bill a demand charge based on this 1250 kW peak.

The business will continue to pay a monthly demand charge based on this 1250 kW peak until either a higher peak is recorded or until a new demand is calculated.  So, if the business only obtains this peak for one 15 minute period the entire month, it will pay a demand charge based on that peak for every minute of that month!
