Newark Public Schools LED Lighting Upgrade

Newark Public Schools, one of New Jersey’s largest school districts, was challenged by aging and inefficient lighting infrastructure across multiple campuses. The district sought to modernize its facilities by reducing energy consumption, lowering operational costs, and significantly improving lighting quality throughout classrooms, hallways, athletic facilities, and outdoor areas. Outdated systems — such as T8 and T12 fluorescent lamps, incandescent bulbs, and metal halide fixtures — were costly to operate and required frequent maintenance.

Goals for the project included:

• Replacing outdated, inefficient lighting (T8/T12 fluorescents, incandescent bulbs, metal halide fixtures)

GreenTech Energy Services, Inc. executed a comprehensive district-wide lighting retrofit, replacing obsolete lighting with advanced, energy-efficient LED technology.

The following work was completed:

• Replaced T8/T12 fluorescent tubes with LED self-ballasted tubes in classrooms and common areas
• Upgraded all incandescent bulbs to LED screw-ins for improved efficiency
• Installed LED high bay fixtures in gymnasiums and athletic facilities
• Retrofitted exterior wall packs, floodlights, and pole lights with durable LED fixtures
• Enhanced lighting efficiency and quality in both interior and exterior environments
